Alleged Hooker Rises to Fame

By Christina Quick | March 18, 2008

It was only a matter of time.

In this case, it was a mere 36 hours after The New York Times broke the story about New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s alleged tryst with a prostitute before 22-year-old Ashley Alexandra Dupre’s bikini-clad photo was circulating throughout cyberspace.

The headlines that brought down Spitzer’s career may well have jump-started Dupre’s. According to Fox News, a song performed by the aspiring singer and alleged call girl had already gotten 90,000 listens on MySpace by last Thursday morning. Another Web site was offering downloads of her music, for a fee.

Fox posted a poll, asking readers if Dupre could be a star. The majority voted “yes.”

Why should anyone be surprised? Anna Nicole Smith got her start as a Playboy model. American Idol contestant David Hernandez previously worked a stripper and lap dancer at a gay club. And Britney Spears, who still makes more money per month than most people earn in a year, routinely gets publicity by showing up in public sans panties.

We live in a society that clamors after the base, tawdry, titillating, lewd and sensual. I figure it won’t be long before Dupre writes a book, poses for a magazine, records an album or becomes the star of a reality TV show. Who knows? In the future, little girls may be singing her songs and wearing her line of clothing.

All the more reason for Christians to reject pop culture sleaze and show our kids by example that an anonymous life of morality is far more desirable than a moment in the limelight.

“He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).
