Treadmills for tots?

By Christina Quick | January 17, 2008

catalog-page.jpgJust when I think I’ve seen it all, along comes something else that makes me go, “No way!” That was my reaction to this ad for diminutive gym equipment. I suppose this is just the thing for millions of kids whose New Year’s resolutions involved a daily workout on a tiny elliptical trainer, stationary bike or treadmill.

Reality check. I can see a small child wanting to imitate a parent’s exercise routine. But honestly, repetitive movement is not that entertaining. I can remember climbing on my mom’s stationary bike as a kid. Once the novelty wore off, it was boring.

So what’s the deal with trying to turn kids into miniature adults? Five-year-olds now have their own social networking and gaming sites on the Internet, from Webkinz to Club Penguin. Grade-schoolers are carrying iPods and cell phones. And have you seen the Britneyesque clothes that are being marketed to prepubescent girls?

Instead of pushing kids into the grownup world prematurely, wouldn’t it be better if we would take time to enter their world? Here’s an idea. Dress the kids in tees or sweatshirts (avoid the kind with attitudinal statements like, “Parents for sale” or “I pass more gas than tests”) and jeans (sturdy ones that cover their bottoms and belly buttons). Then turn off the television, unplug the video game system and take them outside to make mud pies and burn off calories on a real bike.

I agree with you. I’m not sure why adults seem to be pushing adulthood more and more on children. From suggestive clothing to packed schedules and now to joyless exercise. We need to help our children enjoy the innocence and fun of childhood as much as possible.

Send the kids outside and let them play. Or, find some chores for them to do. Working in flower beds or vegetable gardens can provide lots of exercise and a sense of accomplishment when their assigned task is completed.
